As a multi-pattern instrument with omni, cardioid, and figure 8 polar patterns, the 2010 is the right tool for the job when it comes to versatility. With a sweet and silky transparent sound quality, the new 2010 is equally at home when being used to record vocals or acoustic instruments. Internally wired with Mogami cable, the MXL 2010 features a -10 dB attenuation switch that enables the microphone to better handle high sound pressure levels - making it an excellent choice for overhead drum or guitar amp miking applications.  "excellent mic" 2008-11-27
By Robert M. Koretsky (Portland, OR USA)
I've used this mic for several recording sessions over the last few years, and found it to contribute a rich, warm tone to the recording. It is also very sensitive, reliable and noise-free. There is a switch on the body of the mic that allows you to vary it's output sound, and it works pretty well. The case that it came with included an anti-vibration mount and wind screen, which is very handy if you are an amateur musician like myself, and don't want to spend alot on auxiliary gear, like cables, stands, etc..

I have used this mic as a substitute for a Shure SM-57 which I used to record vocals with in my studio. Since it requires phantom power, I use it through a Behringer mixing board before going directly into a Tascam Portastudio 5. It always gives me the sound I'm looking for. I intend to use it in the future to mic a Hammond M3 organ for recording. Behringer products are excellent!

 "Nice home studio mic" 2009-06-07

This 770 is my first MXL mic, but more than likely will not be my last. Mic appears to be well built with a nice shockmount. I like the crisp warm sound that the mic gives while still retaining the smooth lows.

"Stereo SET of mics at a great price and great sound" 2009-12-11
By HMMWV (santa clara, CA USA)
These come with a stereo holding bar and adapter for mic stand. They do need 48 V phanom power from your board or a mic amp. I'm using a mic amp and these are the input to a paging system which I will review in more detail later. The 48VDC comes from the mic processor then cancels feedback and sends the paging audio to my amplifier which I will review as a set.

If you do stereo recording, you can't go wrong with these - their self noise level is so low it is below that of a human ear. It sounds great, and setup outside with 140 dB of gain it really performs well hearing birds chirp from far away, rain drops comming down, and sounds you never would hear.

Note: NEVER get these wet - you must have a cover over them for outdoor use in the rain.

You will need 2 XLR cables for full stereo recording with the transfer bar, but you already know that.

"Nice and sturdy, works as expected, no unique calibration" 2009-09-14
By Brian Steele (Grenada, West Indies)
I purchased this microphone for use with my laptop, TrueRTA software and the MXL USB MicMate for frequency response measurement. I am quite satisfied with the results. The microphone is not provided with a unique specific calibration curve however. Instead, a general calibration curve is provided on the box.

At the moment Parts Express is offering what appears to be a calibrated version of this mic for a few extra $$, which may be a better value to the DIYer.

 "Great Cal Mic" 2009-03-11

 "Good for the money." 2009-03-05
By Alexander Donkle
For room analysis this is a great mic especially for traveling or in situations where using an Earthwork's mic (6x the cost of this) could be damaged.

Much better than the Behringer name would imply, but that can be fixed with a quick piece of tape over the logo ;)

"good for what it is" 2008-08-22
By Christopher M. Porro (san francisco, ca)
i got this mic to do room measurements using room analysis software. apparently you really should use a true omni for these types of measurements. this mic is a true omni. it is also pretty flat (again crucial for room analysis). and the price is right.

you could use this mic for other applications but you should know its very noisy.

if you don't have any true omnis this may be a cheap way to get introduced to them.

MXL is proud to announce the newest addition to the V67 series, the V67Q Stereo microphone. This mic is the perfect addition to the home recording or studio environment. A fixed 90 degree XY pattern delivers a spacious stereo image, but also minimizes loss when translating to mono. The width can be adjusted later with panning if desired, as the left and right signals are delivered on separate balanced XLR connectors. The open tonality of the microphone compliments close micing by capturing the natural reverb of a room, provides an easy solution for drum overheads, and fits nicely under the lid of a grand piano. Follow the link above to hear a sample of the V67Q on guitar as well as other microphone samples.

"Very good microphone for live stereo recording" 2009-03-07
By P. Verlee (Bangor, ME United States)
I bought this microphone to record piano music, chamber music and choral concerts. This is a serious professional microphone at a very reasonable price. It is stereo, and requires phantom power, which right away limits the devices you record on. You basically have to use pro equipment. It comes with a 5 pin stereo XLR connector cable which is only 10 feet long, You can get longer 5 pin stereo XLR connectors from musiciansfriend, Amazon or B and H photo/video. I use a Marantz CDR-300 recorder, but you could also use a marantz 310, any digital multi-track recorder or pro-tool/mac/digidesign interface box setup. (just make sure the interface box has two XLR inputs). The advantage to using a stereo mike is that it only requires one stand and one cable, and this mike sounds fantastic. You do have to back up from whatever you are recording, because it is very sensitive. Watch your levels when you are recording. It records the entire frequency spectrum, very quiet mike, but also very sensitive, you will hear every sniff and cough. It is a neutral mic, warm enough, and doesn't have a digital "edge" to it. I'm very happy with it. The color scheme is a little loud (I call it my Notre Dame Leprechaun Bling-Bling microphone) but once you get past that, it's a serious piece of electronic recording hardware. My previous microphone was a $200 Sony ECM-957 and I've also used a Rode NT-4 (~$600) this is as good as the Rode, but at one third the price. The MXL V67Q is the same price as the Sony but much better, wider spectrum, more neutrl and quieter. You should get a shock mount (I use the MXL 57) and a good tripod (I have an On-stage tripod, the end of the tripod accepts the MXL 57 shock mount). In summary, you can't do much better than this if you are trying to record classical music in a live venue with a digital recorder that has phantom power and XLR connectors. Highly recommended. for more info, go to www.mxlmics.com.

"Great mic - super sensitive" 2009-08-17
By Jordan Vulcano
We used this mic to pick up very low dB sounds in therapy rooms. This thing can pick up the slightest whisper from all the way across the room, it's that sensitive -- really amazing. And we have the mics hanging from the ceiling so they aren't anywhere near the source.

Highly recommend

 "clean, sensitive" 2009-02-21

great product. I don't find anything flat about it's response but I love it's clarity and what I can do with what it picks up! Perfect mic for the $. who knows, maybe it really sounds like that 10' up!

Using as blend for live recording, I pick up the house sound with this mic and lay the soundboard signal on top of it; with the right eq on this mic it makes for a great rich, clear mix. Without the eq it sounds like it's in a tube.

"A great microphone - well worth the price" 2010-01-21

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R19JLENB1GO2Q4 I recently bought the Audio Technica AT2020 USB Condenser USB microphone to use for some video voiceover work that I'm currently doing. I've never owned anything beyond a standard PC USB microphone, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I can honestly say, however, that this microphone sounds amazing. My voice comes through crystal clear with no distortion. Awesome!

This video is of the unboxing of the unit when I first received it.

"Great if you use built in sound card" 2010-01-20
By Joseph W. Manning (Bay Area, California)
Don't get me wrong when I did use this mic it was very clean and had great sound. The only problem is that my DAW only allowed one sound card at a time. So I couldn't use my external sound card and the USB mic at the same time. The DAW I am using is Ableton and the audio interface is a M-Audio Fast track pro.

Anyway I just returned it and got the non usb version.

"microphones are apparently all blemished, toxic chemical included" 2010-01-16
By Daniel J. Knight (Albuquerque, NM)
Forget this as a pristine gift if you are hoping for one.

These microphones are apparently all blemished. I thought I got a dud at first, but then I got a replacement from amazon which was also just as bad looking. I've uploaded two pics (they are side by side). I also noticed that the seller who has uploaded his own, shows a third one upclose, and there are two black spots you can see in his picture...

I'd uploaded a audio video sample but my VIA 1.2 GHz processor can't handle this microphone for some reason even though it can use the built in microphone just fine.

Another thing to keep in mind is that this doesn't come with its own software, so I wasn't able to adjust the microphone settings, I had to use vista's help feature to figure out how to adjust them, and you can't do it manually, you can only let it decide the level, bleah. I wish I had XP installed.

Another problem is the faux leather case, which gasses off a WD-40 like smell and makes me sick. Whatever this smelly chemical is it is apparently common in cheap chinese plastic products and has caused me headaches and provoked me to repeatedly try and puke. Leave it to China to include toxic waste with your purchase.
